Women Leaders Podcast, Episode 44: Nina King

Presented by:

Today, Patti chats with one of our industry’s brightest stars, Nina King, deputy director of athletics for administration, legal affairs, and chief of staff at Duke University.

Nina describes herself as “the most un-athletic person in my family,” but her love of working in athletics administration was sparked as an undergrad at Notre Dame, when she got picked to be a manager on the football team and then the head manager for swimming and diving. It was at Notre Dame that she met Kevin White, the legendary athletics director, and the rest, as she says, is history. You have to listen to hear the story about how as an intern in the business office, Nina was asked by none other than Sandy Barbour to sit in for Kevin’s assistant. That was a move that cemented Nina’s future and helped her get to where she is today at Duke—which is more than a decade in working with Kevin.

In her current role, Nina helps lead a department of 300 full-time and 1,000 part-time staff. She is committed to “building the bench,” and is fully invested in helping prepare her team to be next up when the right job opens—and that’s a perfect example of lifting as we rise.
