Women Leaders Podcast, Episode 39: Bernie McGlade

Presented by:

In today’s episode, Patti sits down with Atlantic 10 commissioner and a Women Leaders past president, Bernie McGlade.

Bernie is truly a legend in college athletics: She’s been decorated with accolades as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Here are just the highlights: After an amazing undergraduate basketball career at the University of North Carolina, Bernie went to Georgia Tech in 1981, where she became one of the youngest Division I head women’s coaches in the nation and the first full-time female coach at the institution. She was already breaking down barriers at the age of 23!

After 17 years at Georgia Tech, Bernie spent 11 at the Atlantic Coast Conference where she absolutely transformed the ACC’s women’s basketball tournament, which resulted in at-capacity crowds and an extensive outreach program that’s still in place. And today, as commissioner of the Atlantic-10, she’s been instrumental in creating a strategic plan that’s extended the reach of the conference throughout multiple media outlets. Bernie’s all about “planning your work and working your plan,” and, wow, have her plans paid off!
