Job Description
The Chief Program Officer (CPO) will lead and oversee all sports programs including competitive, leagues, and recreational sports, and related business practices. The CPO will bring focus, drive success, and contribute to the overall wellbeing, maintenance, and expansion of Asphalt Green’s athlete programs while fostering a collegial environment day to day.

The CPO will supervise Asphalt Green’s well-regarded coaching staff and provide them with the support and space necessary to lead their teams, be competitive, and nurture emerging talents effectively. The CPO will keep up with advances in sports training, methodology, philosophy, and delivery, especially as they relate to youth athletics. She or he will be an attentive liaison and steward with athletes’ parents as well as the Board. The CPO will evoke confidence and empathy, let coaches coach, and shepherd athletes and their families in meaningful ways including fostering prospects for fundraising efforts. He or she will be an internal and external advocate for Asphalt Green’s sports programs.

The CPO will set and communicate strategy and priorities at the departmental and institutional levels and lead Asphalt Green programming through its next growth stage. The CPO should be comfortable vetting new projects and identifying new paths to institutional growth in order to ensure a bigger footprint for Asphalt Green across New York City.

The CPO will oversee a team of six direct reports, 48 full-time staff, and hundreds of part-time staff including coaches, instructors, counselors, and lifeguards. Annual revenue of these programs is over $17 million.

The CPO will play a critical role in the execution of Asphalt Green’s strategic plans and give priority to the following during the first 12 months:

Foster and help promote Asphalt Green’s culture of excellence; implement a vision and strategy, and leverage the organization’s untapped potential; explore the feasibility of new sources of revenue including potential for new partnerships and additional locations;

Oversee coaching and training staff; encourage ownership and creativity, and empower coaches and managers at the team level in order to ensure buy-in and effective oversight and engagement;

Review and strengthen the administration and operation of Asphalt Green programs through data-driven analysis; assess current staffing and structure; recruit new coaches as necessary.

The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented professional with excellent interpersonal and management skills – a leader who can juggle multiple priorities, with the following experience and qualifications:

Proven senior-level, problem-solving, and planning capability, as well as significant coaching, administrative and/or day-to-day operating responsibility in a well-regarded nonprofit organization of similar scope known for its high standards, quality of programs,  and multilayered operations;

Familiarity with a range of sports and fitness areas (specific coaching expertise not required);

A seasoned professional with a history of strategic planning success and broad experience in the areas of competitive sports and/or fitness; demonstrated ability to think strategically in order to get ideas across finish lines;

Demonstrable success as a steward of responsible growth; a track record of leading (or playing a key executive role in) a complex organization and bringing about and responding nimbly to change in exciting and creative ways;

Functional knowledge of sports management generally, ideally including competitive sports and how the process of managing competitive teams works within the college ranks, as well as within the elite level of amateur sports, is a huge plus.

The ideal candidate will also be:

A dedicated leader/team player who is self-motivated, takes charge, motivates others, builds consensus, affects change, and imparts credibility, trust, enthusiasm, integrity, and ethics.

Employer Information
Asphalt Green is a successful public-private partnership seeking to promote fitness and health for all. It is a leading player in the development of high-quality sports and fitness programs and services throughout New York City.

On the revenue side of its business, Asphalt Green offers its members and program users a wide variety of recreational, fitness, and sports activities, along with competitive team activities in aquatics, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Asphalt Green is an active program partner with New York City public schools serving 50,000 children in learn-to-swim classes, middle school sports leagues, and organized recess time in more than 170 public elementary schools.

Fee-based programs for youth are divided in three groups: competitive travel teams, leagues, and recreational programs. Competitive athletics includes: Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) and Asphalt Green Soccer Club (AGSC). AGUA is Manhattan’s premier competitive swimming team and one of the top teams in the Northeast. Every year, the AGUA Swim Team trains more than 300 children six to 18 years old. AGUA has produced elite athletes who have been Olympic medalists, Senior and Junior National Championships finalists, National Junior Team members, National Age Group and Metro LSC record holders, and US Olympic Team members ranked in the top 100 in the world and in the top 16 in the nation.

AGSC is one of New York City’s leading competitive soccer programs for ages eight to 17. Teams are tryout based and compete at the local, regional, and national levels. Their elite coaching staff focuses on developing players and instilling values that set athletes up for success in life. Asphalt Green’s Upper East Side facility features a regulation-size outdoor plus a smaller indoor turf field.

Asphalt Green provides hundreds of fee-based programs. There are approximately 6,000 members in two locations. The Aquatics Department has a full range of programming from four months old learn-to-swim classes to the top competitive youth swim team in New York City. In addition, there are active masters swim teams, water aerobics, and water polo.

Equally important are Asphalt Green’s land-based activities including a summer camp for over 800 children, and a wide variety of sports programs including soccer, volleyball, basketball, and martial arts. Throughout the course of the four-semester year, there are approximately 30,000 registrations for fee-paying programs. This past year, Asphalt Green offered more than $500,000 in need-based scholarships for athletes on its competitive teams and in certain programs including summer campers.

Asphalt Green delivers its services to the greater New York City community through two campuses. Its primary campus is a 5.5-acre facility on the Upper East Side that includes Manhattan’s only Olympic-standard 50-meter swimming pool, outdoor and indoor Astroturf playing fields, and other spaces for fitness and exercise classes. Asphalt Green Battery Park City is a 52,000-square-foot indoor facility that includes a 25-yard swimming pool, a regulation basketball court, and spaces for exercise classes, martial arts, and other classes.

Asphalt Green’s operating budget includes approximately $28 million in net revenue of which 85 percent is from earned income (memberships and program fees) and 15 percent from unearned revenue (individual, corporate, foundation, and government donations). Asphalt Green has no debt and an endowment of over $14 million.

Asphalt Green is seeking a Chief Program Officer who will lead the strategic and organizational functions relating to all sports programming. The position will report directly to Maggy Siegel, Asphalt Green’s Executive Director, and will involve substantial engagement with the Board of Directors as warranted.
