Job Description
The Athletics Department at the University of Colorado Boulder is inviting applications for an experienced Director of Development with substantial fundraising experience preferred. This position’s primary focus will be on development of relationships with CU alumni and other donors, specifically targeting gifts greater than $50K, throughout Colorado and will make monthly trips to Southern California in an effort to grow the region. The Director of Development will handle larger, more complex gift prospects, with the intent of identifying, cultivating, sustaining and increasing donor relationship. Responsibilities will include planning, implementing and coordinating fundraising activities for designated program, planning and carrying out the institution's program of soliciting major gifts. 

What your key responsibilities will be:
  • Works proactively to identify new prospects and cultivate existing relationships with the intent of sustaining and increasing relationships over time.
  • Focuses on personal visits, proposals, and written correspondence as primary methods of donor engagement. Plans, organizes, coordinates and manages daily activities to support gift solicitation efforts and events.
  • Leverages all available University and Athletic Department resources and assets (i.e. tickets, premium seating, parking, event attendance, etc.) to identify, cultivate and solicit fundraising support.
  • Collaborates with University partners to coordinate fundraising strategies for donors with multiple interests.
  • As appropriate, may work to design donor and volunteer cultivation events in order to attract and retain interest in University activities and programs.
  • Works daily to ensure timely, accurate completion of proposals, pledges and fund agreements. Maintains accurate and timely documentation of prospect strategies and contact reports, evaluates new prospects, and generates reports and other correspondence as necessary to cultivate prospects.
  • Proactively represents CU Athletics at external events in order to identify prospects and grow network of support. 
  • Portfolio Management: Manages portfolio consisting of a minimum of 80 prospects. Goals relating to personal contacts, number of proposed gifts, grants, and prospect identification to be set with and approved by management. Goals for number of planned giving donations will be established with management.
  • Develops and manages portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation prospects capable of making significant gifts in order to secure major gift commitments (at least $50K). Plans and implements programs that include measurable targets for each fiscal year (e.g., personal visits, stewardship activities, solicitations).

What we require:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of five to seven years of major gifts fundraising experience.
  • Previous experience working in an intercollegiate athletics department.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products; MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; donor tracking software (BSR helpful). Paciolan/Spectra ticketing and donor development software.

  • Knowledge of fundraising, public relations, marketing, or sales.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and solicit donations from individuals at leadership gift level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to analyze information/situations and work proactively to solve problems.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discretely and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously; must have ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to recruit and manage activities of volunteer staff.
