Because of Title IX: Megan Kahn

Executive Director, Alliance of Women Coaches

Finish this sentence: “Because of Title IX…”

I never knew that girls weren’t “supposed to” play sports. I grew up playing all sorts of sports—including with the boys—earned a college scholarship, coached at the intercollegiate level, and now as a champion of women in sport, I have the opportunity to pay it back.

How have the athletic and academic opportunities afforded to you because of Title IX impacted your life? Can you imagine your life without them?

Thankfully my parents embraced my tomboy ways and I grew up always active in sport. It gave me confidence, the skills to be a great teammate and leader, and the work ethic, resiliency, and passion for striving to meet goals. Without sports and the positive impact and influence they had on me from a young age, there is no way I would be where I am today.

Tell us about a woman who championed you in pursuing your goals. How did her influence inspire or affect you and your career?

I have had several important female mentors and role models in my life, none better than Bernie McGlade (Atlantic 10 conference commissioner). I could never thank her enough for opening so many doors, as a young administrator giving me opportunities to grow in my roles at the ACC and A-10, and always one I can still count on for personal and professional advice.

How are you continuing to champion the next generation of women and girls in sports, and raise awareness on the importance Title IX?

In my role as executive director of the Alliance of Women Coaches, we are always championing the next generation of women and girls in sports. It’s important for young girls (and boys) to understand and embrace the importance of females feeling strong and empowered and seeing women being successful.

If you could send an empowering tweet to every woman and girl across the country, what would you send?

Dream BIG; you are your only limit. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent."
